What is the IP67 degree of dust and moisture protection?

IP67 is a code designation used to indicate the IP rating of equipment against water and dust entering the enclosure. Access to major parts in the equipment is provided by an enclosure that meets IP standards. It is subjected to dust and moisture protection standards, moisture protection is carried out in the same tests, called such testing IP-classification.

How to decipher IP

Technical devices are classified in accordance with international rules (GOST), called the "IP standard", the designations assigned to them indicate the IP degree of protection of the enclosure. To understand what IP protection is, you simply have to translate the abbreviation from English.

IP67 dust and moisture protection standard

A code that has the characters "IP" means "ipi" (means that Ingress protection is translated as "protection against penetration"). Such a code (protection standard) can be seen in the documents of any product:

  • high-tech equipment;
  • electrical equipment;
  • modern smartphones, etc.

If the consumer has purchased the product, he can always find out the level of protection of the housing on the possibility of its work in the room with a high content of dust or humidity. The device is guaranteed to be reliable, if the degree of protection IP67 is in the documents (the deciphering of the first two characters is clear). What do the numbers mean?

What do the digits in IP67 mean?

Classification by degree includes various symbols. The higher the indicator, the higher the quality of the product and its dust-tightness. All the characteristics reflected in the digital code can be seen in special tables. They are more often used by specialists, but in the time of the Internet access to such data is not limited.

First Digit

The first figure defines the strength that the shell can provide:

  • when a person has access to dangerous parts;
  • The equipment underneath the sheath itself.

The designations of the first digit of the code and a description of the value can be seen in Table 1:

Code (first digit)Level of human protection and reliability against foreign objects
zerono protection
1not protected against conscious action
2not reachable by hand
3code for power tools where foreign objects (solid) larger than 2.5 mm can enter
4means wires, bolts, nails and other objects larger than 1 mm
5
  • equipment will not malfunction with a small amount of dust
  • safe from contacts
6dust-tightness of the shell, - maximum reliability from contact

Second digit

The second digit indicates the reliability against moisture penetration and its detrimental effect on the performance of the equipment. The characteristic of the second digit of the code is deciphered according to Table 2:

Code (second digit)Moisture protection level
zerounreliable
1safe from vertically dripping water
2vertically flowing liquid will not impair functionality if the device is tilted by 15°
3Protected against rain, rain drops and splashes falling vertically up to 60°
4protected against spray from all directions towards the device
5protected against water spray from all directions
6Capable of staying in seawater and under strong water currents
7Waterproof, waterproof up to a depth of 1 m for short periods of immersion
8
  • fully waterproof for any amount of time spent in water
  • operability in conditions of water ingress at constant underwater pressure

So for a household electrical socket the specified protection class means "ipi" (meaning that the socket is protected against penetration), with code 2 in the first table and code 2 in the second (IP22) - the device is protected against penetration by hand, as well as not affected by falling vertically pouring water. And the code IP67 marks waterproof and dustproof devices.
